As a first-year student at the Larner College of Medicine, I found comfort in knowing that I could reach out to someone in the class above me with questions about anything, even small things, thanks to a program called Big Sib/Little Sib. I had been living in Burlington for the previous four years, but the transition to medical school came with challenges that I did not expect.

As medical students, we are focused on the human body – how to improve health and well-being, and cure illness. In the world of quality improvement and patient safety (QI and PS), we are focused on the healthcare system as a whole. How can we make it better for our patients? Here at the Larner College of Medicine, I help to lead a group focused on introducing medical students to these important areas in healthcare, in the hopes that they develop the same passion for QI and PS that I have.

The Med Mentors Career Exploration Day, an annual spring event at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont, gives local high school students the opportunity to “try out” health care careers through hands-on experiences with medical students and professionals. This year’s event on April 1 was attended by students from a variety of local schools.

UVM Performance Improvement Collaborative: Bridging the Gap in Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Education

Written by Samantha Magier '19 Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the United States—as rising physicians, we can improve this statistic. In order to effect change as the next generation of healthcare providers, we must be equipped with the necessary resources. This requires us to critically assess the operating procedures that we follow and effectively collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of health professionals to optimize healthcare delivery. Creating opportunities to take such action is the cornerstone of the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and Jeffords Institute Performance Improvement Collaborative.

An American Academy of Pediatrics Campaign: Toxic Stress and Its Impact on Children

Written by Meredith Sooy '17 Each year the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Section of Pediatric Trainees (SOPT) coordinates an advocacy campaign for fellows, residents and medical students across the country aimed at improving the lives of children. This year’s campaign, entitled "Partnering for Resilience: Learn, Empower, and Connect to Address Toxic Stress," focuses on learning about toxic stress, adverse childhood experiences, and resilience, translating the science behind toxic stress and resilience into clinical work, and learning how to connect families to community resources and leverage community partners.
